AfriSAFE, a leading pan-African safety advocacy platform and organiser of the Africa Safety Congress and Awards, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership and personal participation in the ongoing National General Cleaning Days following the recent floods.

The nationwide exercise, themed “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana After the Floods,” was launched in response to the devastating June floods, which claimed lives and displaced residents in several communities.

AfriSAFE expressed its condolences to families who lost loved ones and its solidarity with individuals, businesses and communities affected by the floods.

The organisation praised President Mahama for joining citizens, security agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and other stakeholders to clean and desilt drains in flood-affected areas.

Chief Executive Officer of AfriSAFE, Femi Da-silva, described the President’s participation as a demonstration of leadership by example.

“President Mahama’s personal involvement in this exercise sends a powerful message about leadership, civic responsibility and national unity,” he said.

He also commended the government for mobilising institutions, communities and citizens to restore affected areas while promoting environmental sanitation and public safety.

AfriSAFE noted that the national clean-up campaign presents an opportunity to strengthen public awareness of environmental protection and disaster prevention.

The organisation urged sustained public education on sanitation, routine maintenance of drainage systems, responsible waste management, the protection of natural waterways, and stronger community participation in emergency preparedness.

According to AfriSAFE, these measures are essential not only for Ghana but also for rapidly growing cities across Africa seeking to improve urban resilience and reduce flood risks.

The organisation also announced that the 8th Africa Safety Congress and Awards will take place from November 5 to 6, 2026, at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.

The congress will bring together policymakers, safety professionals, environmental experts, emergency response institutions and business leaders from across Africa to discuss urban safety, environmental resilience, emergency preparedness, electrical safety, workplace safety and climate-responsive public health strategies.

As part of activities leading up to the congress, AfriSAFE announced plans to provide free emergency response and first aid training to more than 10,000 people across selected African countries, including 1,000 participants from Ghana.

The initiative is being organised in collaboration with the Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals (GHISEP) and the Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA), whose leaders have urged Ghanaians to support the national clean-up campaign and adopt proper waste disposal practices beyond the exercise.
