The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa on Tuesday, 6th July, 2021 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals (GhISEP) at the Tarkwa Campus of the University. The MoU, which will be for an initial period of five (5) years and be reviewable and renewable for an additional five (5) years, was signed to boost mutual and corporate relationship between UMaT through its Department of Environmental and Safety Engineering and the GhISEP.
GhISEP is the sole professional body for Safety, Occupational Health and Environmental Practitioners in Ghana backed by the Professional Bodies Registration Act 1973 (NRCD 143). The main goal of GhISEP is to foster scientific progress, knowledge and development of Occupational Health, Safety and Environment and allied or related disciplines through regulations and research for nation building.
UMaT and GhISEP recognise their mutual interest in the fields of research, development, education, setting of standards and guidelines, training, transfer of technology and dissemination of knowledge on long term non-commercial basis. They also acknowledge the importance of the role of higher educational institutions and that of Professional Institutions in promoting, mainstreaming and coordinating activities that facilitate national development.
The Parties have also agreed to establish academic and technical partnership and integrate opportunities for activities and programmes such as teaching, workshop, research, consultancies, field work, staff and students exchange programmes (students and staff attachment or internship placement) and other staff development programmes which may be deemed appropriate by Management of both parties. They have agreed to promote exchange of information publications, scientific materials and facilitate the organisation of workshops, symposia, stakeholder engagement, sharing of ideas to enrich each party's activities, international conferences and exchange of staff and students for the mutual benefit of both Parties.
Assoc Prof Anthony Simons, Pro Vice Chancellor of UMaT lauded GhiSEP for partnering with the University under the terms and conditions set out in the MoU and urged the Institute to bring forth its professional acumen to the benefit of faculty members and students of the University. The Pro Vice Chancellor was certain that the MoU will mutually benefit the two parties and stated that UMaT will play its part in the execution of the MoU.
Nana Amanor Amihere, National President of GhISEP expressed satisfaction with the agreement between GhISEP and UMaT and pledged GhISEP’s commitment under the MoU. The GhISEP President also appealed to the University to engage the Institute regularly on issues of Safety.
Present at the ceremony were Mr M. K. OKrah, Registrar of UMaT, Dr Ishmael Quaicoe, Head of Environmental and Safety Engineering Department and some other faculty members in the Department.
